What is spiritual direction?

"He is before all things, and in him all things hold together" - Colossians 1:17

In Christian spiritual direction, a spiritual director is trained to help you make sense of the various parts of your life and how they form your story, or how they form you. They seek to notice where God's work meets the heart, or any potential barriers in this relationship. St. Augustine (4th C.) famously prayed, "Lord, let me know myself. Let me know you." We call this Double Knowledge; an honest relationship with God emerges as you grow in self-knowledge or self awareness over time. It's a journey, and it's slow.

In a safe environment, the spiritual director helps you to notice the fingerprints of God in your life. Sometimes, it looks like rejoicing together; other times, it looks like mourning losses. The spiritual director relies upon the Holy Spirit's guidance while holding space for you. Spiritual direction is different from discipleship, Bible study, and counseling, though many find that spiritual direction is a helpful complement to these helpful growth practices.

Meetings are typically every 3-4 weeks. Grace firmly believes that anyone who calls themselves a Christ follower, regardless of age or title, may benefit from spiritual direction. This may be only for a season, or it may continue as a lifetime rhythm.
